Y Market Super IPA, otherwise known as Y Market Chou IPA, is a 10.5% double IPA from Y Market Brewing, based in Nagoya, in Aichi, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup and by the looks of the can, is part of their irregular lineup but that may change. Y Market Super IPA is brewed using Eukanot, Idaho 7, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops to make it Y Market Brewing’s highest IBU beer with 81 units.

Y Market Super IPA : Aroma & Taste

Y Market Super IPA poured out a deep golden orange colour with a thin amount of white head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. There was a pungent aroma of dank pine resinous to the beer which was combined with a solid backbone of malt sweetness though it was not a cloying sweetness. Once the malt had subsided, the hops came back into play with a mingling of citrus and tropical fruitiness – some peach and pineapple along with citrus and grapefruit – playing well off each other. At 10.5%, I was expecting a booziness to come off Y Market Super IPA but it was faint and only really present once the beer had warmed up somewhat.

In spite of Y Market Brewing proclaiming Y Market Super IPA to be their bitterest IPA to date, it doesn’t mean so much when there is a sweetness to the beer that takes the edge off it. Moreover, when you’re drunk beers that purportedly have over 100 IBUs, 81 doesn’t mean that much. Maybe a person new to drinking IPAs of this strength may find the bitterness overpowering, but I found it to be balanced with malts and not overly powerful. The hops though did bring a big bunch of fruitiness to Y Market Super IPA with the citrus and tropical notes found in the nose being present in the body and lingering for long. There was also some piney resinous dankness to the beer that also lingered through until the end. At 10.5%, like in the nose, I was expecting some alcohol heat to this beer, but it was rather muted in comparison to my expectations.

Y Market Super IPA : The Bottom Line

Y Market Super IPA is a punchy beer for someone to who is looking to get drunk quickly. It’s a good beer but one is more than enough for me.
