West Coast 12 – twelve : The Bottom Line

Since West Coast Brewing underwent a massive change in their bars, West Coast 12 – twelve is now one of the best places in Shizuoka to get some decent craft beers. That’s not to say that the other bars in Shizuoka aren’t worth going to, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a bar that has many taps of craft beer, or as many different styles, as West Coast 12 – twelve does, with perhaps the brewery location in Mochimune being the next best bet. The only downside, if I have to find one, with West Coast 12 – twelve is that the beer fridge seemed to lack substance considering what had been available at the Container branch, though that’s just a minor downside.

West Coast 12 – twelve : The Full Review

With West Coast Brewing changing the craft beer scene in Shizuoka over the last few years, it was only natural that they would outgrow their original shop at 12 To Go, so off they moved to West Coast 12 – twelve, which as luck would have it, is only a few metres down the road from the original location. And if you don’t know where to look, then you can’t miss it with its tropical looking deck out the front of the store.

West Coast 12 – twelve opened in March 2020, I think, which was only a few months after our original visit back in January of the same year, again, timing was not good for us on that trip. The bar is located between JR Shizuoka and Shin-Shizuoka station, well within walking distance of both really.

West Coast 12 – twelve : Atmosphere & Interior

As you approach West Coast 12 – twelve, you’re met by a bit tropical display at the front of bar, with palm leaves and ferns overhanging the deck area, and it’s enough to make you feel a little bit special. Not many places go to such effort to create an attractive outside entrance, but when the parent company is a design company, it does make some sense then that some effort has been put into it. However, and this is the a minor niggle, that same tropical feel doesn’t extend to the inside, and it seemed to be rather glaring overhead lights and concrete and steel abound. If you like that sort of thing, then you’ll like the inside but it just seemed a bit at odds with the entrance.

Inside West Coast 12 – twelve, there is space for around 40 people seating, at various counter seats, tables, and when the weather is nice, some of the deck area. There are also some standing spaces available too at some of the bigger tables, more so when the front is also opened up. West Coast 12 – twelve is non-smoking and also has no table charge, along with some free WiFi.

West Coast 12 – twelve : Beer & Tap Information

Seeing as West Coast 12 – twelve is the main taproom in the city for West Coast Brewing, it would make sense then to show off as many of their beers as possible, and with 24 taps available, then you’re in luck as you’re bound to find something on the menu that you want to drink, though at any one time, there are a maximum of 16 taps of West Coast Brewing on, with the remaining 8 being guest beers. You will have to excuse the lack of picture of the menu in this write up, as the only one available was behind the bar on the day. On the day we went, there were 16 taps of beer in ,with beers coming in two sizes : glass (240 ml or so) from 900 yen, and pint (480 ml) from 1,300 yen and all of the prices include tax.

There is also a beer fridge offset to the entrance with some import cans, but to be honest, I felt the selection was more of an afterthought to the bar listing, rather than an actual valid selection worthy of any purchase. If you want cans of West Coast Brewing to takeaway, then you will have to go next door to get some. There is also a beer flight option that gets you 4 x 150ml beer for 1,600 yen that I wish I had bought instead of a pint – mainly because I wanted to try and drink as many beers on the menu.

West Coast 12 – twelve : Food Information

The menus at West Coast 12 – twelve are in both English and Japanese, so you won’t have any problems ordering any food here though you might get stuck as soon as you hit the item called “Fried Paradise”. Let’s be honest, fried food and beer go hand in hand, so seeing that on the menu meant that everything else got ignored – hamburgers (that looked amazing as they came out) were ignored, salads (vibrant and full differing from most in bars that are limp and languishing in the kitchen), and some other finger foods – and I don’t regret it at all. Those people who are wondering about non-meat options, yes, there are quite a few vegetarian options on the menu as well.
