TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa : The Bottom Line

If you’re in west Tokyo area and looking for a place to drink, then TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa should be on your list. And if it isn’t on your list, then put it on there and get over there and experience some of the best beer to come out of Yokohama, and perhaps even Kanto. The beers are all well made, and TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa has a decent variety of beers on tap, and also in cans, that can be taken away. The only downside to TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa is that it is in Shimokitazawa so you may have to brave the gaggling and cackling groups of young ‘uns in the area. The whole place is non-smoking, has no table charge, and also has free wifi.

TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa Inside

TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa : Background

I’ll be honest – I forgot all about TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa and writing it up. It’s a place I’ve been to a couple of times now, and with the site move, it’s a bar listing that just got lost in all of the chaos. And that’s a shame that it’s taken so long for me to write this down as I would happily venture to TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa when I’ve close by – I enjoyed it that much. Now, on the fourth time of visiting it, I’m actually going to commit it to BeerTengoku writings.

TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa, if the name doesn’t give it away, is a taproom for TDM 1874 Information, a brewpub based in the Tokaichiba area of Yokohama. It’s the fourth bar in the TDM chain, though the TDM 1874 Aoyama branch did close down a few years before the opening of this one. This branch opened in January 2022, just at the tail end of the Odakyu station in the area having been completed – making access around Shimokitazawa a lot easier. The bar is about a minute’s walk from the south west exit of the station.

TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa : Atmosphere & Interior

As you enter TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa, you’re greeted by a medium open space with a large fridge of cans to one side of the entrance, and then the bar counter on the opposite side. The large windows allow lots of light to come into the bar, and as such, it feels a lot larger than it really is. It also means you can get some window seats and do some people watching around the station area.

In terms of seating, there’s space for around 20 people at various seating combinations around the bar – 7 people at the counter against the window, then another 10 people or so at the tables in the middle of the bar, and some outside seating area when the weather is nice. The whole space is non-smoking and has no table charge either. I did pick up some free wifi though I wasn’t sure if it was from the building itself or from TDM 1874. Either way, there is some free wifi.

TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa : Beer & Tap Information

TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa has six taps of craft beer on, though when I last went, one of the taps was for a domestic cide. Like before, if the name wasn’t a giveaway then all the beers on tap at TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa are from TDM 1874 – still one of my favourite breweries in Japan. The beers come in two sizes: half pint (240ml) from ¥700 and US pint (473ml) from ¥1,150 with all prices inclusive of tax. I didn’t notice any beer flight, nor any happy hour options at the bar.

As mentioned, there is a big fridge as you enter into TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa, with plenty of options of beers from both across Japan, and also imports from around the world, with a heavy leaning towards US imports. The beers are takeaway only at the time of writing, which is nice and gives Le Petit L’Ouest some competition.

TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa : Food Information

I didn’t get any food any time I’ve been to TDM 1874 Shimokitazawa – sorry, but I just haven’t been hungry! However, the Nashville chicken, which I’ve had at the main branch in Tokaichiba, is delicious and there are plenty of non-spicy options for those that want to keep their stomachs intact.
