Vertere : Background

Vertere Beer is a microbrewery located in Okutama, in western Tokyo, Japan. The brewery opened up March 2016 and also operate a small bar called Beer Café Vertere. Vertere founders, Hikari Suzuki and brewer Tsukino Kokage are two friends from high school. In December 2014, they established the Vertere company with the idea of “Imagine who, where and how to drink, and create a memorable beer experience”, after which Beer Cafe Vertere opened on July 6, 2015 in Okutama.

The following are some of the beers we’ve had from Vertere Beer :

  • Vertere Albizia – a 9.7% imperial IPA brewed with Simcoe, Glacier, Mosaic, Saaz, and Amarillo hops.
  • Vertere Ambrax – a 6.5% fruited sour brewed using blueberry juice, lactose, and also vanilla beans.
  • Vertere Aria – a 5.7% American Pale Ale hopped using imported American Citra hops.
  • Vertere Aurora – a 6% saison brewed using Pale 2 Row, Maris Otter, Okutama Barley, Pilsner, wheat and uses Sorachi Ace, Huell Melon hops.
  • Vertere Baldwinii – an 8.5% pastry imperial stout brewed using adjuncts such as corn sugar, lactose, almonds, cacao nibs,  and vanilla beans.
  • Vertere Californica – a 7% American IPA brewed using Maris Otter, Munich, Carared, and Melanondin, with a very American hop bill of Columbus, Simcoe, Cascade, and Chinook.
  • Vertere Casimiroa – a 7.5% NE-IPA brewed using Maris Otter, Golden Promise, Oats, Wheat, Carapils, and the mandatory lactose as part of its grain bill, and then hopped using imported Citra, Mosaic, and El Dorado.
  • Vertere Christmas 2022 Barley Wine – an 11% barleywine brewed using ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and some wood chips.
  • Vertere Christmas 2022 Blonde Ale – a 6.5% blonde ale brewed using honey and lemon peel, and contains Aurora hops.
  • Vertere Coffea #2 – a 7.5% coffee stout fermented with Ethiopian coffee beans that have been roasted in-house.
  • Vertere Cream – a 5.4% mild ale brewed using Maris Otter malt from the UK, as well as UK East Kent Goldings hops.
  • Vertere Decora – a 7% Kveik IPA brewed using a strain of Kveik yeast though which one is unknown with Ella and Enigma hops.
  • Vertere Fusca – a 6% sour blonde which includes Calista and Saaz hops.
  • Vertere Globba – a 6.5% spiced stout brewed using Pale 2 row, Maris Otter, Carafa, Black, Flaked Oats, and Melanoidin, and then hopped with imported Hallertau hops from Germany. It uses imported Indian chai spice too.
  • Vertere Laxmannia – a 7% American IPA with Vic Secret hops.
  • Vertere Liponesco – a 6% sour kettle soured using Lactobacillus, and contains other adjuncts in the form of blackcurrant juice, cloves, vanilla, and lactose.
  • Vertere Magnolia – a 7.2% double IPA hopped using Idaho7 and El Dorado hops imported from the USA.
  • Vertere Meconopsis – a 6.8% American IPA brewed with Maris Otter, Munich t2, Pilsner, and Vienna malts, alongside Columbus, Azacca, Centennial, Chinook, Cascade, and Citra hops.
  • Vertere Milk Stout – a 5% milk stout brewed using lactose during fermentation.
  • Vertere Nestotus – a 7.5% Belgian blonde with Aurora and Tettnanger hops.
  • Vertere Nucifera – a 10% imperial stout brewed using coconuts and cacao, along with vanilla and lactose.
  • Vertere Passiflora – a 5.5% NE-IPA brewed using Citra, Mosaic, and Idaho 7 hops.
  • Vertere Red IPA – a 5.6% American IPA.
  • Vertere Rhoeas #3 – a 6.6% West Coast IPA with Columbus, Amarillo, and Simcoe hops.
  • Vertere Ritro #2 – a 5.3% blonde ale brewed with the aim of not getting bitterness from the hops, essentially giving it an IBU of 0 (how is that possible?) and contains Pale 2 Row, Chit malt, Oats, wickiup, Oats Malt along with Strata, Ella, Nelson Sauvin hops.
  • Vertere Sanctum – an 8.5% Belgian Amber brewed with Tettnanger hops, with an unknown strain of Belgian yeast.
  • Vertere Sumire – an 8.5% imperial stout that contains lactose and maple syrup.
  • Vertere TIPA – a 10% double IPA brewed using Idaho 7 throughout all stages of brewing.
  • Vertere Zela – a 5% fruited kettle sour brewed using pomegranate juice and chamomile, and uses Aurora hops.
