Seven Yokosuka : The Bottom Line
I felt a bit cold after visiting Seven Yokosuka – and that’s purely because the 7/11 in Hammerhead, for me, is a better and cheaper choice to get some beers. If you’re looking to put together a bar crawl, it is a good choice to add to the list. As long as you’ve got a spare bit of change as the prices are a tad higher than expected really. The whole place is non-smoking, has no table charge, and there’s also free wifi.
Seven Yokosuka : Background
In Hammerhead, an area on the port side of Yokohama, lies possibly Japan’s best convenience store – if you’re a fan of craft beer that is. The 7/11 in the area has grown to an enormous behemoth for craft beer. At the weekends and on holiday, the beer fridges can often be seen threadbare or even empty. Hordes of people trying to pick up some domestic, and imported, craft beers. The shop manager has seen this week in, week out, and decided to open up a sister store a bit further down south in the town of Shioiri, on the outskirts of Yokosuka.
Seven opened in July 2024, though not to as much fanfare as the 7/11 had. Located in Shioiri, it’s about a 2 minute walk from the local Keikyu main line station, though be warned, not all trains stop at this station, so make sure you get on the Tokkyu Limited Express stop if you’re coming down from Tokyo as this is the only express train that stops here – which I didn’t know about when I came down!
Seven Yokosuka : Atmosphere & Interior
As you walk into Seven, you’re greeted by a large open space, with a standing area. However, and more importantly, lots of fridges of craft beer. The bar does nice and airy, with windows letting in natural light, pleasant even on the rainy day I went. For seating, there are some window seats available, with space for about 10 people, with some counter seats too. There’s no table charge, and the whole place is non-smoking, with some free wifi too.
In terms of atmosphere, I was in the bar on a Sunday evening, and it was pretty quiet, with only four other people in the bar. Seemed a bit weird really to open a bar like this in the Shioiri area, and not further down the road in the Honch of Yokosuka, which has a much larger demographic of drinkers.
Seven Yokosuka : Beer & Tap Information
Now here’s where I was disappointed – the beers. Perhaps I was in a bad mood that day, or I was feeling off, but after walking in and seeing the prices of cans, I wasn’t going to buy any to drink in. I get that bars need to make a profit to survive, but seeing the beers being ¥200 – ¥300 than other places, I suspect that there is a corkage fee involved in the pricing. It left me a bit cold to be honest so I went straight to the taps of beer.
There are 8 taps of beer, though only four were on when I went. There is an in-house beer made by West Coast Brewing and other beers on tap. The beers come in two sizes : half (240 ml) from ¥1,000 and then pints (470 ml) from ¥1,50. This puts it right up there as one of the most expensive to drink. Which seems very weird considering the area we were drinking in. Shioiri isn’t known for being an affluent area, and with these prices, I could understand why there weren’t many people here.
The beers in the fridges can be bought to takeaway, but the prices do not change it seem for off-site drinking as there were no other prices listed, unlike at Valle Sagrado which has a system of listing in-store and takeaway prices. There’s no beer flights either, but with 4 taps, there’s not much need to really.
Seven Yokosuka : Food & Menu Information
There’s not much on the menu really, in spite of a full working kitchen but the chips were fine, if not a little pricey, as that plate above cost ¥900. Thankfully prices do include tax and there menus do have some English. So you’ll be fine to order some drinks and food.
