Cuffy in Kashiwa, Chiba

Cuffy : The Bottom Line

While Kashiwa isn’t the hotbed for craft beer, there is something to rival The Life by Marche Baton as Cuffy ticks all the boxes that makes us happy. Good curry and good craft beer? That’s Cuffy right there for you. The whole place is non-smoking, has no table charge, prices include tax, and has a decent enough selection of craft beer on tap for you to enjoy. Make sure you can read and speak some Japanese though as none of the menus were in English.

Cuffy : The Full Write Up

It’s not often that I come across a place that offers up curry and craft beer, with Himalaya Table in Kanda, Tokyo being the only other place I’ve seen. However, when a friend mentioned about this being part of the “Kashiwa Triangle” of craft beer, I knew the next time I was up there, Cuffy would be on the list of places to go.

Cuffy is located about 6 minutes walk from JR Kashiwa station on the Joban Line and opened in August 2016; however, the shop moved in August 2020 to its current location.

Cuffy Inside

Cuffy : Atmosphere & Interior

The first thing you notice about Cuffy is that in spite of it being a curry restaurant and bar, it doesn’t look like your typical curry restaurant. Instead, it looks like a slice of Americana, with its low tables and a random assortment of canteen chairs, with random bits of paraphernalia dotted around the inside. It has a rather kitsch appeal to it, with some old dog-earred books also dotted around for people to read.

Cuffy has space for about 24 people inside, at various tables and counter seating inside, with a couple of seats by the window too, if you’re into watching people walk past. The whole place is non-smoking and does not have any table charge either. There was some random Christmas music playing, with the dreaded Mariah Carey on the playlist – not everything can be perfect I guess.

Cuffy : Approach to Covid-19

When you enter Cuffy, you have your temperature taken, with alcohol spray available for usage too. The staff are all wearing masks and try to separate groups as much as possible, with plastic shields between tables to minimise spray I guess from conversations.

Cuffy : Beer & Tap Information

Cuffy has 6 taps of beer on at all times, with two of those dedicate to Kirin’s Ichiban-shibori lager and black beer, and the other 4 taps being craft beer – which is good as you can come here with your non-craft beer drinking friends. The beers come in two sizes: small (240 ml) from 750 yen, and regular (430 ml) from 1,000 yen. The prices include tax but there is no happy hour nor beer flights. The prices are a bit higher than what you’d pay in Tokyo but we’re out in the countryside of Chiba, aren’t we?

Cuffy : Food Information

The primary food at Cuffy is curry, with a variety of curries on offer, from Indian to Thai, and some other styles in between. The curry I had was a mixed set of mutton biryani and lamb keema, both very tasty and delicious. There was a very limited selection of vegetarian curry on the menu though it was all in Japanese so make sure you’re with someone who can read Japanese.
