Craft Beer Gau’s in Shibuya, Tokyo

Craft Beer Gau’s The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for something of the beaten track in Shibuya, then Craft Beer Gau’s is right up your street. However, the beer list will neither excite you nor will it entice you away from other well established places in the area. All the prices include tax as well as having some English on the menus too. The atmosphere is cosy in the bar and there is no table charge either. Though we didn’t notice any smokers, apparently Craft Beer Gau’s is a smoking bar.

Craft Beer Gau’s The Full Review

It’s hard to get away from the main drag in Shibuya as it seems to have everything you need there. Unless you wish to drop a lot of money at Craftheads, then the north part of Shibuya (way past Bunkamura) doesn’t hold much either. So it’s strange that Craft Beer Gau’s opened up in that area. It’s been open since November 2016, though the day BeerTengoku went, the sky had decided to open a few days earlier and dump lots of snow.

Craft Beer Gau’s is located about a 10-minute walk from Shibuya station – just don’t let Good Beer Faucets coerce you with their happy hour beers. There is space for about 20 people inside, with 8 seats at the counter and some tables dotted around the bar as well. The atmosphere, considering the Craft Beer Gau’s seems to be in a residential area of Shibuya, was chilled out with some British indie music going on in the background. While the Craft Beer Gau’s is a smoking establishment, there is no table charge.

There are six taps on at Craft Beer Gau’s, with there being a split between domestic and imported craft beer. All the beers come in one size at 400ml and all the beers cost the same at ¥950. There is also a beer flight of any three beers of your choosing for ¥1,200 and they come up in 150ml glasses. There isn’t any happy hour though all the prices do include tax as well.

Craft Beer Gau's Food 1The food at Craft Beer Gau’s is geared towards meat eaters; however, there are a few vegetarian choices. The chips though were brilliant. If you’ve ever eaten at Burger King in Japan, then you’d recognise those chips straight away. Crunchy on the outside, nice and fluffy on the outside. Some of the menus are in English, so there isn’t going to be any random meaty surprises on your table.

Rob, if I was to include this venue in the next edition of “Japan Jaunt” {which I would not, since I had not visited it}, I would certainly scribe, “Should the unthinkable occur, and you miss your last train back to where you were staying, this is a bar where you can kill off the hours until the trains start running again.”
