Y Market Lupulin Nectar Mk-II : Background

Y Market Lupulin Nectar Mk-II is an 8% hazy IPA from Y Market Brewing based in Nagoya, Aichi. It’s part of their limited lineup and is available in cans and on draught. It’s deemed to be an evolution of the Y Market Lupulin Nectar – which happens to be one of my favourite beers in Japan – and uses Cascade, US Cascade, US Mosaic, US Citra Cryo, US Idaho 7, and US HBC1019 hops in the making of it.

Y Market Lupulin Nectar Mk-II : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

First thing to say about this beer is why, oh why, do Y Market Brewing keep filling the cans right up to the brim, and then sum? It’s always the case that as soon as I open up the can, beer splurts out and I end up losing some of the amber goodness over the kitchen counter.

Anyway, Y Market Lupulin Nectar Mk-II poured out a vibrant hazy golden colour with barely any head on top – again, see the point above about the can being overfilled. The bubbles that did appear did last during drinking, though the head didn’t really leave any visible rings around the glass.

The aroma was good enough and on a par with the Y Market Lupulin Nectar – but it wasn’t so much of a punch as I expected. There were both citrus – lemon and orange – notes with tropical – mango and pineapple – aromas, alongside a touch of peach being present. Of course, as the beer warmed up, these became more pronounced, but the telling thing about this beer was how soft everything seemed in terms of aroma.

I was drinking Y Market Lupulin Nectar alongside this beer, and one thing to note about the beers is Y Market Lupulin Nectar Mk-II definitely smoother on the palate than the original one. There was less of hop burn in comparison, but this was at the cost of the hoppiness being not as full or well rounded. The flavours were the same as in the nose, but I couldn’t help think that it was more of rounding than an evolution.

BeeY Market Lupulin Nectar Mk-II : The Bottom Line

Y Market Lupulin Nectar Mk-II is a decent beer but it’s not really enough of a change to warrant it being called an evolution from the original.
