West Coast Fresh Powder is an 8.5% hazy double IPA from West Coast Brewing, based in Mochimune, in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s unknown whether West Coast Fresh Powder is part of their seasonal or limited lineup but at the time of writing it can be found in both cans and on draught. West Coast Fresh Powder is brewed using imported Bruce, El Dorado, and Strata hops and came about because in 2022, Mochimune experienced an unusual amount of snow in winter – the area is a port town so is usually protected by the warm water stretch known as the Kuroshio current.

West Coast Fresh Powder : Aroma & Taste
If West Coast Brewing say their beer is hazy, then you can guarantee that it is going to be hazy and West Coast Fresh Powder was opaque. It had a dark orange colour to it with a thin amount of white head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. The aroma was a real mixture of smells going on – peach and pineapple were the first to come through with some lemon, but the addition of coconut too – well that was just confusing. My brain was not ready for it and was taken aback. I took a look at the side of the can, and on the homepage, but there wasn’t any coconut in this beer. What the heck was going on?
The body started off with a smooth bitterness that moved onto the fruity flavours from the hops, once again, with the peach and pineapple coming through first. West Coast Fresh Powder wasn’t dry and salty like some DDH beers I’ve had so thankfully I didn’t need a glass of water to help me through the beer. The body had some lemon and coconut, but once the beer had warmed up, some light melon flavour came through too. There was also a touch of alcohol heat too once it had warmed up, but not enough to feel like it was burning the back of my throat. The fruity flavours lingered on to the aftertaste, with a touch of sweetness to help things move along.
West Coast Fresh Powder : The Bottom Line
West Coast Fresh Powder is a solid beer that does what it is supposed to do.
