Brewpub Ergo Bibamus The Bottom Line

I hate using the word potential, but Brewpub Ergo Bibamus has it – now it just has to live up to what its planning on offering, and fast. In its current form, I can’t see Brewpub Ergo Bibamus being high up on craft beer fans’ list of places to go – it’s out of the way, expensive, and doesn’t offer up anything that can’t be found closer to the stations in the area. However, it will be interesting to see how a brewpub holds up in the area with little competition in the area beside 29BY in Kannai, Yokohama. The whole place is non-smoking, has no table charge, and also includes tax in the price – however, the prices are expensive anyway with the tax and there was zero English in the bar itself too. Let’s hope they get their brewing license soon in 2019.

Brewpub Ergo Bibamus The Full Review

Brewpub Ergo Bibamus opened in June 2018, with the hope of it first being a bar and then moving onto a brewpub, under the name of Spica Brewing. At the time of writing, the brewpub hadn’t been granted its license. It seems that is the current way things are going in Japan, with bars coming first and then later on, hopefully, a brewing system to make some beers in-house. Moreover, with the bureaucracy involved in opening a brewery, it seems Brewpub Ergo Bibamus may still have some wait on their hands.

Brewpub Ergo Bibamus is located between Bashamichi and Nihon-Odori station on the Minatomirai Line, though you could walk there from JR Kannai station. There is space inside for about 30 people inside, with counter seats at the bar, as well as tables around the edge of the room too. The whole place is non-smoking and has no table charge too. However, all of the menus are in Japanese so bring along a friend who can at least read Japanese.

Brewpub Ergo Bibamus Beer 1

At the time of writing, Brewpub Ergo Bibamus has 12 taps of beer on, with those being split between domestic and imported craft beer. There are also two or three taps of cider on as well – a welcome addition for this Brit here. The beers come in two sizes: small (100ml) from ¥300 to ¥400, and regular (300ml) from ¥750 to ¥1000, firmly placing Brewpub Ergo Bibamus at the expensive end of the scale for drinking in Japan. Even though prices do include tax, the domestic beers are as expensive as some of the imported beers. There is no happy hour nor any beer tasting flights, which is what the 100ml beers are for – but let’s be honest, who is going to order a 100ml glass of 4.5% beer outside of tasting set. There are beers available to takeaway though.

I didn’t get to try any of the food at Brewpub Ergo Bibamus – mainly because there was nothing on it seemed besides some random bar snacks. There are plans for a bigger menu of food later on during the year.

The hours are peculiar. Lunchtime opening on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, but not Saturday – and an hour later on Sunday, with a gap also?

Yep – very weird hours. Here’s hoping once the brewpub opens up, the hours become wider but I suspect its location doesn’t help out.
