Marca Cafe & Beer Factory The Bottom Line

The minimalist design may leave some people feel cold in Marca Cafe & Beer Factory but it can’t be denied that it’s very much a hipster kind of place. Not to say it’s a bad place but it was one of the more expensive bars on our visit Osaka for beer; thankfully there is no table charge and tax is included in the price. There is also free WiFi and also for those in need of a pick-me-up, free coffee too. Marca Cafe & Beer Factory is also non-smoking and also offers you the chance to see the brewing process from time-to-time. If you’re worried about English, then don’t worry as most of the menus are in English too, with Kamiy-san also helping out to explain things if needed.

Industrial.. a little cold.

Marca Cafe & Beer Factory The Full Review

Marca Cafe & Beer Factory opened in April 2015 and is also the first brewpub in Osaka’s Kitahorie district. Even though they have been in operation for only two years, some of their beers have become well known across Japan, even winning some awards, with Kamiya-san also brewing everything on site in the 300l brewery out back. Kamiya-san can also be found serving customers from time-to-time, with her knowledge of beers impressive as well as pairing them up with some of the food available at Marca Cafe & Beer Factory.

Located about two minutes from Nishi-Nagahori station, Marca Cafe & Beer Factory stands out like a sore thumb in the mostly suburban area of Kitahorie. Knowing that gives some explanation as to why the bar was nigh-on full at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon. The industrial-like interior design did leave me feeling somewhat cold – with stainless steel piping and concrete-bare walls all around the bar, yet it also felt spacious too. There is seating for about 15 people around the counter, with also some standing space too. There isn’t any table charge either and there is free Wifi if you ask for the beermats – and they are needed as the ID and password haven’t been changed since it was installed it seems. Marca Cafe & Beer Factory is also completely non-smoking too.

Marca Cafe & Beer Factory offers anywhere between four to eight taps of craft beer on at any one time, with the majority of offerings being brewed in-house. Kamiya-san seldom brews the same beer twice. The beers come in three sizes: small at 150ml for ¥450, medium at 250ml for ¥650, and large at 500ml for ¥1100, with all prices including tax. However, some beers do include an additional charge, such as the Mango White costing an extra ¥200. It does make Marca Cafe & Beer Factory one of the most expensive places in Osaka if you’re drinking the small size beers, but the large is pretty good value for money. I didn’t notice any beer flights nor happy hour either.

Most of the food at Marca Cafe & Beer Factory is geared towards snacks, with some larger meals going. The regular snacks on the menu are in English as well as in Japanese, with some daily specials written in by hand. That may prove problematic to some; however, Kamiya-san very kindly explained what they are in English. Having eaten a lot at Boku to Inu, I just plumped for some of the mixed nuts – not the largest of portions for the price paid.
