Ise Kadoya West Coast Pilsner : Background
Ise Kadoya West Coast Pilsner, as the imagnative name suggests, is a 4.5% West Coast pilsner from Ise Kadoya based in Mie. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup and is available all year round. What is a West Coast pilsner I hear you ask – well let me answer that. It’s a beer that uses lager yeast and American hops – doesn’t that just narrow it down for you. The style has its origins in 2016, so it’s one that could stick around for a long time, or be a flash in a pan. Black IPA anyone?
Finally the hops. Well, Ise Kadoya haven’t been helpful with this beer, as all the say in their PR blurb is “The hops are carefully selected from advanced hop producing areas such as the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, and are rich in fruit characters.” Thank you. Thank you very much.

Ise Kadoya West Coast Pilsner : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Ise Kadoya West Coast Pilsner poured out a slightly hazy vibrant golden straw colour with a thick white head on top, that consisted of some large and medium-sized bubbles.
You wouldn’t be hard pushed to guess the hops in this beer – I’d like to think they were Cascade and Citra – with the citrus punch coming off the beer. It was quite dry in the nose, with a light dusting of some subtle pilsner malt, but it was those citrus aromas that stole the show. As the beer warms up, there was a touch of light grape notes – have they used Nelson Sauvin as well in this beer – but it was a well rounded nose.
The initial bitterness was sharp and too the point, but unlike an American IPA, that bitterness did not linger. It was fast and fleeting, leaving the citrus flavours to linger longer and become dominant. Ise Kadoya West Coast Pilsner had a light, crisp body that meant it was perfect for the warm day I drank it on. But it didn’t really develop its flavour. It was essentially a citrusy lager from start to finish, with a bitter flourish at the beginning.
Ise Kadoya West Coast Pilsner : The Bottom Line
Ise Kadoya West Coast Pilsner is drinkable beer for a hot day. If you can find it a decent price point, then pick it up but it’s not really indicative of the style.
