Otama Yawa-Yawa : Background
Otama Yawa-Yawa is a 5% American pale ale from Otama Brewing, based in Joetsu, Niigata. It’s part of their regular lineup, and can be found in both bottles and on draught. The name “Yawayawa” is a word from the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture that means “take it easy” and the label design depicts Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen toast to Kasugayama Castle, saying, “We have some delicious pale ale!” – who says that BeerTengoku isn’t educational? As for hops, that’s unknown at the time of writing.

Otama Yawa-Yawa : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Otama Yawa-Yawa poured out a slightly hazy golden honey colour with a thin amount of white head, made up of small bubbles that dissipated quickly away, leaving just a few small ones on top.
The beer had a decent aroma on it from the beginning, with a large citrus note coming through, which consisted of grapefruit and lemon, and some orange also coming through as Otama Yawa-Yawa warmed up. Moreover, the beer had a clean distinct American pale ale sweetness, with it supporting the hops; however, I couldn’t detect any off-aromas from the beer.
Finally, Otama Yawa-Yawa had a smooth and clean bitterness from start to finish, with a lingering citrus flavour to it all. It was more of the same, with citrus notes permeating through, and a light sweetness from the malts. Overall, Otama Yawa-Yawa had a clean body to it.
Otama Yawa-Yawa : The Bottom Line
Simple and to the point, Otama Yawa-Yawa is a solid American pale ale that won’t excite you but a good introduction into pale ales.
