Atami Shouten : The Bottom Line
It’s not often we recommend places without taps of craft beer – well this is the second place in fact after Cafe & Bar Blooming in Mishima. However, Atami doesn’t have much to offer for bars with craft beer on tap so Atami Shouten is our first recommendation in the area. While the cans aren’t the cheapest, it’s great that they’re sourcing from the local area. Moreover, it’s a place you can pop in for just one beer, pick up a quick bite to eat, and be gone. The whole place is non-smoking, has no table charge besides a one-drink minimum, and is easily accessible from the station.

Atami Shouten : Background
It was on a recent trip to Atami that I was looking for some craft beer to drink. While Sapporo beer does produce a “local” beer for Shizuoka, I wanted something local in terms of beer. And Atami, in spite of being a popular tourist location, isn’t a place that has much craft beer on offer. While Far Yeast Brewing Company does have something in the area, we just missed its opening times.
We had passed Atami Shouten earlier in the day, it hadn’t opened up mind, and I was determined to get back here. It’s about a five minute walk from JR Atami station as you go down towards the beach, so an ideal place to either stop in on the way down or the way back from the beach. Or the Hihoukan. The bar opened in December 2024, and since then, has proven to be popular with locals and tourists alike.
Atami Shouten : Atmosphere & Interior
The main entrance to Atami Shouten is located on the main road, so you can readily see inside. On the way to the beach, the bar was just being prepared for opening, so a bit early for us. However, on the way back, it was pretty much full up. We were shown to our standing place – right by the entrance. Though it was the middle of winter, the space was pretty warm, with oden boiling in one corner of the kitchen, and simmering in another corner.
Inside there is space for around 20 people, with some tables towards one side of the bar. Though there is some seating, there is no table charge at Atami Shouten; however, there is a one drink minimum – alcoholic or soft drink. For that, you do get a small morsel of food alongside your drink. The whole place is non-smoking and there is also some free wifi for those wanting to send some pictures.

Atami Shouten : Beer & Tap Information
As mentioned, Atami Shouten doesn’t have any taps of craft beer; however, it does have cans and bottles to drink in store. There are two sides to the fridge – local Shizuoka Beer and then some beer from farther afield. The cans have stickers on, with the cheapest being from ¥990. There’s no option for a takeaway or beer flights of course, so make of that what you will really.

Atami Shouten : Food & Menu Information
All of the food at Atami Shouten is based around local Shizuoka produce but the oden was by far and away the pick of the day. With a small pot simmering away in the corner, you’re free to grab a bowl, load up, and keep the finished sticks in front of you. As you go to pay, you have to take the sticks, aka kushi, with you to the register and then they’re all tallied up. Vegetarians have plenty of choices here, unless you don’t want your sticks touching meats, while non-Japanese readers / speakers may struggle as there wasn’t any English menu or writing around the bar. All of the prices do include tax though.
