Amaterasu : The Bottom Line
Amaterasu is a good little place, though it’s not readily accessible with it being on the back of the island. However, if are you in the area, and up for a cold beer with some tacos, then check it out. The beers are good for a young brewery, but there is room for improvement. The prices are reasonable considering its location. Perhaps the whole place allows smoking. However, grab a few outside seats, soak up the evening sun, and relax. Then wonder how you’re going to get back to the station. A quick shout out to James from Yokohama Rides for introducing me to this place. He knows his bike routes for sure!

Amaterasu : Background
Enoshima is an popular tourist location, filled with walks and shops. However, it’s not a place known for drinking as the main shopping street is filled with tourists and shops with snacks. Morever, if you’re searching for craft beer, then you’re left with either Kamakura Beer or perhaps Shonan Beer. That all changed in April 2024 with the opening of Amaterasu, located on the north western side of the island.
The nearest station to the bar is Katase-Enoshima, and it’s about a 20 minute walk. Of course, you can pair your visit here with a walk around the island. All those steps will get you thirsty for sure.
Amaterasu : Atmosphere & Interior
The bar, alongside the brewery, is located in small residential area, surrounded by a few fishing shops. Don’t worry, you won’t be able to smell the fish or bait. The first thing you see is the terrace seating in front of the store. The concrete benches are fitted with cushions made from old jeans, creating a relaxing space where you can feel the ocean breeze that occasionally passes by. There is space for around 16 people at these seats though if you’re situated by the door to the bar, you may have to move out of the way.
There is also space on the second floor to eat and drink in with room for 10 people up stairs. Though on the days I’ve been here, I’ve just wanted to sit outside. Outside drinking is rare in Japan, for good reason. However, when I do find out, it’s always going to be the first choice, unless it’s raining. Unfortunately, they do allow smoking so that is a major downside to this place – a shame when the beers are not cheap. There is no table charge either, and there is some free wifi as well.

Amaterasu : Beer & Tap Information
There are 10 taps at the bar, though on the days I’ve been here, around eight taps were on. The beers come in one size at 360 ml from ¥800. There are no other sizes available, nor are there any beer flights. A shame really as I wanted to try a few of them. There is a small fridge for takeaway beers in cans, so that’s a good option to get some for the beach. The beers I’ve tried were well made, though there is room for improvement.

Amaterasu : Food & Menu Information
The owner loves tacos so guess what? The menu is tacos! And I love tacos so that’s a good sign. There is some fried food on the menu, though the menus are small. Vegetarians may have some issues here as there were only meat and seafood options available for tacos. In terms of the fried food, they do fried vegetables so there is something. The menus had some parts in English and parts in Japanese. The prices include tax.
