Y Market Never Sober IPA is a 7% American IPA from Y Market Brewing bases in Nagoya, in Aichi, Japan. It’s part of their irregular lineup – beers that Y Market Brewing seem to make, then stop and then maybe release again in the future but who really knows besides them – and it can be found in both cans and on tap. Y Market Never Sober IPA is brewed using US Simcoe, US Citra, US Ekuanot, US Amarillo, NZ Motueka, and NZ Nelson Sauvin – and breathe! The unusual thing about this beer is that “sober” in the name refers to “素面” in Japanese (shirafu) which can also be read as “sumen” or bare noodles – so no idea really why this beer has this name.

Y Market Never Sober IPA : Aroma & Taste
Y Market Never Sober IPA poured out a hazy golden orange colour with a thin amount of white head on top that faded fast to leave a few bubbles around the outside of the glass. I was expecting lots of citrus notes from the beer but instead, came away with lots of tropical aromas of mango and pineapple that burst through – quite a surprise really. There was a light grape and berry-like quality to the beer too as it warmed up, blending well with the tropical aromas. There was barely any noticeable malt character to the beer to note.
The inital drinking of Y Market Never Sober IPA was a swift bitter flavour with the mango and pineapple blending nicely with it – not an astringent flavour not punchy, but still noticeable. The tropical flavours were the most dominant throughout drinking, though there was a touch of alcohol heat to the beer as Y Market Never Sober IPA warmed up. The grape and berry quality found in the nose was a bit lacking in comparison in the body – not surprising really but still a bit disappointing as it was blended well in the nose.
Y Market Never Sober IPA : The Bottom Line
If you’re looking for a tropical IPA, you could do a lot worse than Y Market Never Sober IPA.
