Sankt Gallen Double Mint Chocolate is a 7% spiced stout from Sankt Gallen, based in Atsugi, in Kanagawa, Japan. It’s part of their winter lineup and also part of their annual release for their Valentine’s Lineup. One batch of Sankt Gallen Double Mint Chocolate contains 30kgs of a mix of spearmint and peppermint, and is brewed using Pale ale malt, crystal 80°L, caraaroma, chocolate malt, and flaked wheat, while it is hopped using Kent Goldings, Cascade, Willamette, and Nugget. At the time of writing, there are no plans to release Sankt Gallen Double Mint Chocolate again.
Sankt Gallen Double Mint Chocolate Aroma and Taste
Mint and chocolate seem to come around on an annual basis, but it can’t really have taken someone so long to have made a mint beer? In the research up to drinking Sankt Gallen Double Mint Chocolate, I couldn’t come across any brewery in Japan having made one before! Totally taken by surprise that someone hasn’t jumped on this before.
Sankt Gallen Double Mint Chocolate poured out a pitch black colour with just the faintest of off-white heads on top. However, the aroma of mint coming off the beer was evident from the moment the bottle was opened. It really did smell like someone had opened up a tube of minty fresh toothpaste and left it out. Only when Sankt Gallen Double Mint Chocolate had been given the chance to warm up did some chocolate and coffee come through, but that warmth had also allowed the mint flavours to really open up somewhat.
The minty freshness of the beer extended into the body as well – almost like chugging down on a coffee immediately after you have brushed your teeth. If you’re into that sort of thing then you’re a sick individual but at least you’ll like the mintiness in the beer. It definitely left a minty fresh aftertaste on the palate before a faint residual chocolate and coffee tinge.

Sankt Gallen should have reigned in the mint just a bit – it’s a bit too bold for my liking.
