Background
Kankiku Brewery, makers of Kujukuri Ocean Beer, is a craft beer brewery located in Chiba, Japan. Like many other breweries in Japan, Kankiku Shuzo started making out sake back in 1883. After travelling to England, France, and Germany, they began making beer in July 1997. For their Kujukuri Ocean beer range, it is brewed using traditional German methods that fulfil the Reinheitsgebot purity laws.
Originally, the Kankiku Brewery was created to serve the local farming and fishing communities of Kujukuri, an area with abundant pure groundwater and rice suited for sake brewing. They set up their beer brewery facility adjacent to the sake operations near Kujukuri Beach, using the same pure underground water source prized for sake. While they continue brewing the classic German styles, since 2023 they have refreshed packaging and branding to appeal to craft beer enthusiasts.
