South Horizon Brewing Taproom (Niida / Kochi)

South Horizon Brewing Taproom : The Bottom Line

South Horizon Brewing Taproom is a place that should be on your list if you’re in the Kochi area though it’s a bit of a trek to get there from central Kochi itself. There’s also a lot of money that has gone into this building to create its open and warm atmosphere and if you can, try to get here for around sunset as that way you’ll be treated to some amazing colours, with delicious beer, and one hell of a burger to end the day. The whole place is non-smoking, there’s no table charge, and it’s also dog friendly if you sit outside.

South Horizon Brewing Taproom Inside

South Horizon Brewing Taproom : Background

If you don’t know about South Horizon Brewing, then please go over and read the South Horizon Brewing Information background. The facility has been developed from the ground up and it’s clear that a lot of money has gone into this place. It is a multi-purpose complex: It includes a craft beer brewery, a beer restaurant (taproom), a bottle shop, coffee bean roasting facility, and more.

It’s located at Kochi New Port, and as such, it’s not the easiest place to get to. On the day I went to the taproom, a large contingent of the drinkers were from the cruise ship that had docked – the ominous Diamond Princess though thankfully we’re out of that period now. There is a local bus that runs close to the port though you will still have to walk from the nearest bus stop to the taproom.

South Horizon Brewing Taproom : Atmosphere & Interior

South Horizon Brewing Taproom is a very open place with large windows that allow a lot of light in throughout the day, and also offer up spectacular views of the sunset over Katsura Beach if you happen to have time to do that. There’s space inside for around 50 people, with some outside sofas for those with dogs. Inside, you can sit at various tables or even at the counter and look inside the brewery. The whole place is non-smoking and has no table charge as well.

It’s a place full of hustle and bustle – and that adds to the atmosphere. The smells from the kitchen and the coffee roastery drift across the bar, not in an obnoxious way, but enough to get your attention. On top of it, there was some light background music that, unfortunately, included that song by Mariah Carey – I hope that’s not an all year round playlist but just seasonal at the time of year.

South Horizon Brewing Taproom : Beer & Tap Information

There are ten taps at South Horizon Brewing Taproom, though eight of those are South Horizon Brewing beers, and two others being Edelpils – the best macro lager out there in Japan – and also a Whiskey highball option. The beers come in two sizes : regular (250 ml) from ¥700 and large (500 ml) from ¥1,000. Unfortunately, there’s no beer flight option on the menu, which is a shame, and nor is there an all-you-can-drink plan. However, there are cans available for takeaway though on the day I went, the fridges were looking rather empty.

South Horizon Brewing Taproom : Food & Menu Information

As I was so hungry before I went to South Horizon Brewing Taproom, I knew exactly what I was going to get – the hamburger. And it’s up there with some of the best I’ve had with craft beer – it’s just a shame it’s not in Kanto really. The menus do have enough English on them to order, with all of the prices including tax. There are a few vegetarian options to pick from and the staff are helpful enough to point that out.
