South Horizon Brewing Information

South Horizon Brewing : Background

South Horizon Brewing is a brewery located in the port city of Kochi, in the southern part of Shikoku Island – one of the four main islands that make up Japan. The brewery began operations in July 2023 and the brewery, which got its brewing license in December of the same year, is found in the Kochi Shinko Highland Green Area, where many large cruise ships from overseas stop.

The main idea behind South Horizon Brewing is to create a sustainable future by upcycling beer. Their model involves processing the malt lees generated during brewing into fertilizer for growing rice grown in Kochi Prefecture. The harvested rice as a secondary ingredient in beer. In addition, they plan to use the hop vines generated when harvesting hops into paper (hop paper) and use them for shipping cardboard, business cards, coasters, etc. for beer.

Another reason why they opened in Kochi is that the prefecture is one of the biggest consumers of beer in Japan. Yet it also has one of the lowest concentrations of breweries.
