Caghiya Pizza and Tap : The Bottom Line
There are places that do beer better than Caghiya Pizza and Tap in the area; there are places that do the pizza better than Caghiya Pizza and Tap in the area; but there aren’t any places that offer a decent number of taps with a value for money in the area. The nomihodai deal – no matter how long you go for – is fantastic value for money, and gives you a chance to serve your own beer; too much head? Your fault! Finally, the whole place is non-smoking and there is some free wifi as well, with the information posted around the bar.

Caghiya Pizza and Tap : Background
Caghiya Pizza and Tap Musashi-Kosugi, to give it its full name, is part of the Caghiya Brewery chain, with this being the first store in the area, the second being up in Jiyugaoka. The bar is located around a five minute walk from Musashi-Kosugi station south exit, and with a slowly growing craft beer market in the area, has some strong competition too. The idea behind the bar is for you to be able to drink whatever you want, with what is on tap, and paired up with some Roman style pizza.
Caghiya Pizza and Tap : Atmosphere & Interior
As you approach Caghiya Pizza and Tap, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that area the bar is located in was once the main snack bar area of Musashi-Kosugi. A weird thing to bring up in a bar review, but hear me out. When I came to Japan in 2004, Musashi-Kosugi didn’t have a JR Yokosuka / Shonan-Shinjuku line stop – there was no station! The area around the Tokyu line was small shops and the Nambu line was used for passing through. At some point in 2010, JR decided to build a platform for the Yokosuka line, and since then, the area around the station has seen an explosion in growth.
But approaching the bar, you’re taken out of the razzmatazz around the station area, and back into what the area used to look like – snack bars, hole in the wall izakayas, meandering alleyways. As you enter the building that Caghiya Pizza and Tap is located in, something feels a bit unusual. You’ve stepped back in time, and are walking through an alleyway of snack bars, seemingly closed down yet here’s a bar. When you walk into the bar, you’re transported to something that feels like a part of history, but also new.
The layout from the snack bar before this remains, with tables and sofas all dotted around the bar, organised in such a fashion to allow people to move easily from table to table; chatting or pouring drinks for each other. There’s space for around 30 people inside – at the tables, sofa seating, and the window bench as well. The whole place is non-smoking and there is some free wifi to use. Unfortunately, there is a table charge of ¥330, though you do get some unlimited turmeric soup – I guess to help settle the stomach with all the drinking you’re about to do.

Caghiya Pizza and Tap : Beer & Tap Information
The beers at Caghiya Pizza and Tap all come from Caghiya Brewery, and with up to 10 taps of their beer, there’s also a decent selection of beers on tap. The beers come in two sizes : small (250 ml) at ¥880 and regular (470 ml) at ¥1,320. However, the selling point is the nomihodai – all you can drink plan – that represents great value for money. There are three options for this plan : 60 mins at ¥2,420, 90 mins at ¥2,970, and 120 mins at ¥3,520. You can choose the glass size – small or regular – and you serve yourself – so if you like beer with minimal head, go ahead and try!
The beers I had on the day – five to be exact as I went for the 60 min plan – were acceptable. Caghiya Brewery aren’t going to win any awards for them, and neither are any of them going to blow you away – but they were drinkable and all matched to style. I didn’t see any option for takeaway beers though with all the bottles dotted around the bar, perhaps they do them from time to time.

Caghiya Pizza and Tap : Food & Menu Information
The menu at Caghiya Pizza and Tap focuses on the Roman style pizza that they make instore, and on the day I went, there were four different pizzas, all price at ¥550. The pizza is fine – again, it’s not going to win any awards and is probably on a par with something you can make at home using a home oven and some 65% hydration do, but it fills the spot and is decently priced.
You can order at your table, using the QR codes placed at each table, instead of asking the staff. The menus are all in Japanese, so you need to be able to read Japanese or have some translation app on your phone. All of the prices include tax though, so there’s not suprise at the end of drinking.
