Miroc Brewery Taproom (Marugame / Kagawa)

Miroc Brewery Taproom : The Bottom Line

Miroc Brewery Taproom is a great little place to come in and have a few beers – though be warned, you might end up staying longer than expected thanks to the warm atmosphere, and decent beers and food on the menu. I hadn’t planned on staying for long, but by the time I left, I felt like a member of the community – the head brewer came out to talk about the beers and explain long into the night. The whole place is non-smoking and there is no charge, along with some free WiFi to connect to. Finally, you can also buy some beers to takeaway.

Miroc Brewery Inside

Miroc Brewery Taproom : Background

FamMiroc Brewery, founded in 2017 in Marugame, Kagawa, is a small brewpub dedicated to brewing expressive, community-focused craft beer. Inspired by the Buddhist figure Miroku, the brewery aims to create a welcoming “public house” that brings people together through good beer and conversation. There is also a longer-term ambition: according to an interview, they aim to expand production, possibly open a second brewery, and even explore distilling (whiskey) to grow the Miroc brand.

It’s located about a ten minute walk from JR Marugame station but it’s also a little bit off the beaten track, so I’d advise using the map below. I got a little bit lost though that has nothing to do with the beers at all. No way, I am not blaming the beers at all for that one.

Miroc Brewery Taproom : Atmosphere & Interior

From the outside, especially at night, Miroc Brewery stands out among the houses in the neighbourhood; with its bright lights and metallic facade. Stepping inside, it’s a very unusual place – wood from top to bottom : wooden floor, wooden walls, wooden tables, wooden counters, wood everywhere. Except for the brewery that is. It kind of reminded me of some Midwestern bar in the USA that is frequented by truckers in the middle of nowhere.

There’s seating inside for around 40 people at various tables and bar counter seats with the whole place being non-smoking. There’s no table charge either at Miroc Brewery Taproom. Within 10 minutes of sitting at the counter, I was already involved with conversations going on – being a foreigner in the middle of nowhere can do that, but I was being asked about other foreigners in the town who drink there. By the time I had left, I felt that I had made some new drinking friends and I would come back again the next day to drink.

Miroc Brewery Taproom : Beer & Tap Information

There are ten taps craft beer on at Miroc Brewery Taproom, with all of the beers being in-house beers brewed next door. The beers come in two sizes : half pint (240 ml) at ¥770 and pint (480 ml) at ¥1,100. Though there are ten taps, there’s no beer flight option, or any happy hour offers available. However, with those ten taps, there’s a good variety of styles on the menu, with some experimental brews as well, as Miroc Brewery like to use local ingredients where possible to help support the community.

Miroc Brewery Taproom : Food & Menu Information

I wasn’t hungry when I went to Miroc Brewery Taproom so I just plumped for a small portion of fish and chips instead – and it was tasty if not unusual with potato wedges instead of actual chips. There’s a decent selection of food on the menu, but they are all in Japanese though I suspect there may be an English menu available and there’s also a number of vegetarian options you can pick from. Finally, the prices include tax as well so there’s no nasty surprises at the end.
