das fleisch KöniG (Kochi / Kochi)

das fleisch KöniG : The Bottom Line

Come to das fleisch KöniG for the food and the imported German beers for sure, but the in-house beers need a lot of work doing on them really. It’s such a shame as I did like this place – enough to order two plates of food and some Aventinus as well but the beer just fell flat. The staff were super friendly and chatty, with one of the members and I talking for a while and even asking about the beer. Besides that, the place is non-smoking though it does have the dreaded table charge of ¥500 per person.

das fleisch KöniG Inside

das fleisch KöniG : Background

das fleisch KöniG, which roughly translates to “King of Meat” is a modern steakhouse and beer bar located in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture. Despite its German-style name, the restaurant is not an old European establishment; it is a relatively recent local brand that combines high-quality meat with craft beer in an urban setting. It opened in 2021 and is the second in the KöniG chain, with the other branch on the north side of JR Kochi station. The bar is located on the 4F of the Parkside Terrace building but there is a lift, so there’s no need to climb stairs – thankfully!

das fleisch KöniG : Atmosphere & Interior

As you step inside the bar, you’re greeted by a various wooden tables, and also wooden partitions that seem like a throwback to the COVID-19 period – it’s almost as if you’re trying to be separated from other drinkers, yet still remain as part of a communal experience. There are two floors to the bar, and I got stuck on the first, though the second floor did seem to be pretty lively as I could hear a lot of commotion – the good, drunken kind – going on and I felt a bit left out.

There’s space for around 30 people inside das fleisch KöniG, split across the two floors. The first floor has space for around 12 people, and more upstairs. The whole place is non-smoking, with a small smoking area outside of the bar. However, there is the dreaded table charge of ¥500 per person, so factor that in to the end of your drinking session.

das fleisch KöniG : Beer & Tap Information

With das fleisch KöniG being a German bar, there’s plenty of German-stule beers on the menu, with ten taps of craft beer on. The beers are mostly from the Yamamoto Bakushu company, which is also part of the KöniG company. The beers come in two sizes : small (280 ml) from ¥770 and large (483 ml) from ¥1,100. However, the beers I had weren’t very good – though they’re German, they really didn’t excite me and felt insipid. As such, I ended up switching to Schenider Weiss Aventinus instead and was immediately happy.

In spite of the large range of taps, there’s no beer flight option, nor an all-you-can-drink plan on the beers. Fingers crossed that when you go, the beers have improved as it’s such a shame.

das fleisch KöniG : Food & Menu Information

And it’s even more of a shame that the in-house beers weren’t compared as the food is fantastic here – so much that I ended up wanting some more but I was full on pretzels! Be warned, those pretzels are served hot so take your time with them. With das fleisch KöniG priding itself on meat, the menus are mostly steak and sausage based – never a bad thing if you’re a meat eater – yet, there are some vegetarian options for those people, such as pretzels, potato salads (without bacon!) and salads too. The menus include tax so there’s no other surprises at the end of drinking.
