August Beer Information

Background

August Beer is a microbrewery located in Tokyo, Japan. The “Augus” in the company and brand names comes from the English “august” (adjective), which means “original, genuine, dignified.” The common pronunciation is “Augusto,” but they deliberately chose to use the Latin pronunciation to give a sense of history and tradition.

The brewery was founded in 2004 as a phantom brewery without its own brewery. They opened their own brewery in 2017 at the “Kiyosubashi Brewery,” in a corner of a hotel on the banks of the Sumida River, and started selling their own brewed beer in May 2018. However, The brewery relocated to Kawarayu Onsen Play Base NOA in Naganohara Town, Gunma Prefecture in December 2021.

On June 8, 2009, August Beer Club opened in Nishi-Azabu near Roppongi Hills as an antenna shop for August Beer. On June 11, 2013, August Beer Club “B” opened in Hiroo as the second store of August Beer Club. These taprooms were established and operated by August Beer Club Co., Ltd. by August Beer employees who became independent. August Beer Club Hiroo Branch closed on May 1, 2015. August Beer Club Roppongi Branch was forced to close on June 30, 2017 due to the building it was in becoming dilapidated and there was a demand to vacate.

The Kiyosubashi Brewery attached to the restaurant “PITMANS” in the hotel “LYURO Tokyo Kiyosumi’ – opened on April 14, 2017 on the waterfront along the Sumida River, renovated by Livita Co., Ltd., which operates hotels of various styles nationwide. As fate would dictate, PITMANS changed its name to CLANN BY THE RIVER, and has also revamped its menu.
