Kankiku Glanzend IPA

Kankiku Glanzend IPA : Background

Kankiku Glanzend IPA (sorry, I can’t do umaluts on my keyboard) is a 6% German IPA from Kankiku Brewery based in Kujukuri, Chiba. It’s part of their canned and draught line up, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. It was first released in June 2025 and uses German Hallertau Blanc and Polaris hops, which is what makes it a German IPA I guess. However, unlike American IPAs, this beer also uses 100% imported German Pilsner malt.

Kankiku Glanzend IPA : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

Kankiku Glanzend IPA poured out a very light straw colour with a massive amount of frothy white head on top, though it didn’t last long. It faded to a thin later on top, with some small bubbles on top, though it did leave some streaks down the side of the glass during drinking.

The aroma was intriguing – I’m so used to hoppy American IPA, bursting with citrus and tropical notes, that Kankiku Glanzend IPA felt lacklustre in comparison. But it wasn’t – it just had a different than expected aroma. There were some light white grape notes, with some melon for good measure, alongside some herbal floral notes. Like I said, a very different aroma to what I expected.

The body was light and refreshing, with a light zippy bitterness, that was efficient – it came, it was tasted, it dissipated. The hoppy flavours were once again confounding – more like a light white wine than a beer. However, with the light pilsner malt body, it ended up tasting pretty good with the lingering hoppy notes.

Kankiku Glanzend IPA : The Bottom Line

I’ve not had too many German IPAs before and Kankiku Glanzend IPA is a good example of a well made one. Definitely will try to find this on tap.
