Susukino Yell Stand (Sapporo / Hokkaido)

Susukino Yell Stand : The Bottom Line

Susukino Yell Stand is perfect for popping in for a quick beer, maybe three, or even getting some local beers from Hokkaido to take away. I really enjoyed the atmosphere here, with the one standing table in the middle of the bar just right for mingling with others, or maybe keeping yourself to yourself. Moreover, with it being located around some other food shops, it’s great that you can take your own food in too. The whole place is non-smoking and of course, no table charge. Moreover, there is some free wifi too.

Susukino Yell Stand : Background

Susukino Yell Stand opened in November 2023, and is the latest taproom it seems for Susukino Beer, though for with the typical translation of “ale” being written as “yell” for shouting out the area. The beer came about to help support Susukino post-Covid, as tourist numbers dropped, which is a major part of the local economy in Sapporo. Moreover, the bar is also supporting breweries from Hokkaido.

Susukino Yell Stand is located in the basement of the Susukino Cocono building, located at the main entrance to the Susukino area, with the Nikka Whisky advertisement just across the road. With it being underground, you can get to it from Susukino station, located on the Sapporo Underground Namboku line and Sapporo Shiden tram network.

Susukino Yell Stand : Atmosphere & Interior

As you approach the bar, you’re greeted by a massive noren, a traditional Japanese piece of art, made of cloth and hung at the entrances of restaurants, bars and other establishments in Japan, are each uniquely designed and proudly displayed. Traditional noren are carefully made by hand by artisans who have inherited the craft. It’s a neat way to advertise the entrance to the shop, and also helps to keep out prying eyes – so unless you’re wearing something inconspicuous, you could hide away for a couple of beers.

With this being a standing bar, there are no seats, though there is space for around 10 people at the large table in the middle of the bar. Moreover, there is no table charge here, and the whole area is non-smoking.

Susukino Yell Stand : Beer & Tap Information

There are six taps of craft beer at Susukino Yell Stand, with four of their regular beers on, and then two taps for specials or limited beers. The beers come in one size, at 410 ml from ¥1,000, with the specials / limited beers being an extra ¥200 on top. Moreover, there is a three beer flight that gets you any three 150 ml beers on the menu for ¥1,500 yen. There isn’t a happy hour option though.

Finally, there is a huge beer fridge at the end of the bar, with cans available for takeaway, as well as drinking in store. However, if you do drink in-store, there is an additional fee to pay for the cans, though the prices are handily listed on the tags, so there is no surprise when you get to the register to pay.
