Okei Brewery : Background
Okei Brewery is located in Nippori, Tokyo, and has been in operation since June 2022. They are predominantly a brewpub with, at the time of writing, no plans to expand out to cans or bottles, so take that with a pinch of salt. It’s not the first, and nor will it be the last, time we’ve heard a brewery mention that. The brewpub is a few minutes’ walk from JR Nippori Station, in a quiet residential area just off the main road, you’ll see the trademark sunglasses sign.
At the time of writing, it’s also the only brewery located in the Arakawa area of Tokyo. The company behind the brewery is Okey Co., Ltd., which, is a food and beverage company that operates restaurants, mainly Italian restaurants, in Tokyo. Matsuyama Yosuke , head brewer at Okey Co., Ltd., originally started out as a pizza chef at the chain of Italian restaurants; however, he went to Tochigi Microbrewery in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture for brewing training for one month in August 2021.
Their logo, a pair of sunglasses, is synonymous with their brand and also their social media efforts. The sunglasses, which are original goods, are distributed randomly to customers. Photos of customers who agree to receive them are uploaded to the store’s Instagram.
