Road Station Awaji : Background
Michi no eki, or road stations, are a quintessential part of the driving adventures in Japan. They’re commonly used as rest stops over long distances, and you can occasionally see people camping in the areas, either in tents, in their cars, or sometimes camper vans / cars if you’re lucky. Michi no ekis are also filled up with local produce in the form of fruit, snacks, vegetables, and the occasional souvenir. If you’re even luckier, you might even come across a michi no eki that serves alcohol – pretty rare considering that drink driving in Japan is zero tolerance – one drink and you get caught, and you’re losing your license.
Road Station Awaji is one of those magic michi no ekis that combines all of the above into one spectacular building, though the beer choice may be lacking, it’s still a place that I couldn’t believe exists. It’s located at the foot of Japan’s longest suspension bridge – the Akashi-Kaikyo bridge – that spans between Honshu and Awaji Island. The beer is mostly Awaji Beer though from time to time, they do have other brewers, such as Nami no Oto Brewing available in cans. What to do with those drinks? Well if you’re not driving, then walk outside, sit right by the water’s edge and watch the boats and ships sail under the bridge.
