Miyajima Brewery Information

Background

Miyajima Brewery, also known as Miyajima Beer, is a brewery located on the island of Miyajima, in Hiroshima prefecture. At the time of writing, they are the only brewery located on the island. They originally started in March 2010 though their first beers were produced at Niigata Beer instead of on the island as their initial idea proved prohibitively expensive, leading to a temporary rethinking of the plan in 2011.

Four years later, around 2015, the economic environment began to change as the number of foreign tourists visiting Miyajima began to increase. With financing finally in sight, the decision was made to build a three-story Miyajima Brewery on the former Miyajima Patio site, with construction beginning on April 6, 2017. Miyajima Brewery was completed on November 22 of the same year, marking the grand opening of Miyajima Brewery Restaurant, a Miyajima Brewery-owned restaurant, a beer stand, and a shop.

The following are some of the beers we’ve had:

  • Miyajima Momiji Lager – A 5% Japanese rice lager that was inspired by the colours of the momiji leaves found on the island.
  • Miyajima Pale Ale – A 5% English pale ale which uses locally grown hops and water sourced from the local area.
  • Miyajima Weizen – A 5% German hefeweizen that can be found in cans, occasionally in bottles, and on tap at various places.
