Tall Boys Steel Drum Tropical Stout is a 7% tropical stout from Tall Boys Brewing, based in Nagoya, Aichi. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Tropical stouts lie somewhere in between a regular stout – roasted and dark – and an imperial stout – bold and thick – with tropical stouts also being a bit sweeter than those two. Tall Boys Steel Drum Tropical Stout is brewed using Okinawan kokuto (brown) sugar and uses lager yeast instead of ale yeast.

Tall Boys Steel Drum Tropical Stout : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Poured out a pitch black colour with a large frothy head on top that collapsed to a finger’s worth of head. The head was slightly off-white tan coloured and also left some streaks down the glass.
I wasn’t too sure about how this beer was going to smell – I don’t think I’ve ever had a tropical stout before outside of Export Guinness (less said about that the better). The aroma of this beer was a mixture of toffee and chocolate, with a touch of coffee and roasted malts, but the aroma was lighter than I was prepared for. It wasn’t as bold as an imperial stout, but it was crisper than a regular stout. As Tall Boys Steel Drum Tropical Stout warmed up, the toffee aroma grew stronger and had a touch of burnt caramel to the nose.
The body was drier and lighter than expected. People have an idea of stouts being rather heavy, or sitting got low on the stomach, but Tall Boys Steel Drum Tropical Stout was much lighter. It almost had the quality of a schwarzbier when chilled, but it did get a touch heavier as it warmed up. The main flavours of note were the toffee and chocolate, with a touch of roasted black malt for good measure. The flavours lingered on the palate with some semblance of light sugar notes just staying the distance.
Tall Boys Steel Drum Tropical Stout : The Bottom Line
Lighter than expected though not thirst quenching. A definite drink for the cooler months but easy drinking for a stout.
