Shiga Kogen 10×2 : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Poured out a deep ruby reddish brown colour with a minimal amount of head. There’s barely any legs on the head as the beer got drunk, though the chill haze in the beer was from being stored in the fridge.
Rich aroma of a whiskey barrel with some oakiness on the nose, combined with a strong toffee and caramel aroma from the doppelbock base. There’s a touch of alcohol heat as the beer warms up, but it’s hidden well behind the honey notes that grow as the beer warms.
Not as abrasive as I thought it was going to be. The whisky barrel has been aged out a tad, so there’s a warming sensation from that, without the whisky burn. Alongside the caramel and toffee-like base, there’s a touch of alcohol heat that is pleasant and soothing. Like in the aroma, it’s best to let this beer warm up, so it opens up, and you’re greeted by a myriad of flavours playing off one-another nicely.
Shiga Kogen 10×2 : The Bottom Line
A big beer, that is warming and kind on the mouth, throat, and soul. Buy two – one to drink now, and one to age.
