Himitsu My Favourite Bitter : Background
Himitsu My Favourite Bitter is a 5% English bitter from Himitsu Beer, based in Mie, Japan. In Japanese, the name is oshi no bitter”, which roughly translates to “guessing bitter”. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. It’s a collaboration beer, having been brewed with Beer Kichi and Yuya Boys. As for the characters on the can? That’s Beer Kichi-kun and Rakko-chan – apparently they love beer so who am I to dislike them.

Himitsu My Favourite Bitter : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Deep ruby brown colour with a thin off-white head that dissipated into a few bubbles around the edge of the glass.
All malt aroma with lashings of amber sugar sweetness and chocolate notes with a hint of yeast funk going on. When it had warmed up, some earthy notes appeared, guessing from whatever hops were used in it.
Light to medium bitterness but not as strong as an American pale ale or IPA. Smooth malt flavour of caramel and chocolate with hints of nuttiness as it warms up. Slight yeast notes in the body as the beer warms up. However, they were not overpowering or off putting.
The Bottom Line
This is a solid introduction into English bitters and I hope it becomes an all-year round option, or at least a seasonal offering.
