West Coast Particle Ocean : Aroma & Taste
We’re going big with West Coast Particle Ocean – a 9% triple IPA, a style of beer that can either end up being an alcohol sugar bomb if the fermentation finishes too higher, leaving too much residual sugars in the beer, or bone dry and being drinkable with hops popping through. Thankfully, West Coast Particle Ocean is more towards the latter and let’s see why.
West Coast Particle Ocean poured out a relatively clear golden straw colour – the haze on the side of the glass was because the beer was stored cold. The aroma though immediate screamed out West Coast with its thick piney aroma being the most obvious to come through. However, that’s not to say nothing else came through because the hops did a great job here. A citrus and tropical bouquet was present, with grapefruit, lemon, and oranges representing the citrus family, and some mango and pineapple being part of the tropical group. As West Coast Particle Ocean warmed up, the beer did lean more towards the tropical side but there wasn’t much sweetness from the malts present, either when chilled or warm.
The body started off with a big West Coast punch of bitterness, and unashamedly so. The beers from West Coast Brewing recently have been more punchier than at the beginning, and it’s an evolution that I have enjoyed seeing. The hops were resinous and piney in the body, with the citrus and tropical flavours really balancing out the body. In spite of this being a triple IPA, the alcohol didn’t feel “hot” nor did it feel like this beer was a boozy one either. As West Coast Particle Ocean warmed up, the tropical flavours became more of the star of the beer, with just a touch of malt sweetness elevating them up some more.
West Coast Particle Ocean : The Bottom Line
West Coast Particle Ocean packs a hoppy punch and is a very nice beer – though be warned!
