Far Yeast Off Trail 3 Funkeys is a 9.5% Belgian strong ale from Far Yeast Brewing Company, based in Yamanashi, Japan. It’s part of their in-house Off Trail range, and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Far Yeast Off Trail 3 Funkeys is brewed using three different Belgian strong ales that have been blended together, and then infused with Brett and then stored in red wine barrels for 11 months. At the time of writing, it’s unknown whether Far Yeast Off Trail 3 Funkeys is a one-off or will be seen again.
Far Yeast Off Trail 3 Funkeys Aroma and Taste
Far Yeast Off Trail 3 Funkeys poured out a hazy ruby orange colour with a plump white head on top that clung to the side of the glass during drinking. The sour notes to the beer came through immediately, but brought along a warming rich malt nose to it too. Though Far Yeast Off Trail 3 Funkeys had been stored in red wine barrels, there wasn’t really anything in the nose to indicate this besides a very subtle oakiness to the beer. When Far Yeast Off Trail 3 Funkeys had warmed up, a faint cherry-like aroma came through with an edge of phenolic to it.
The body was very smooth – I was expecting a big sour hit from the Brett used in fermentation but it wasn’t to be. The Belgian strong ale base came rushing through, vying for notice. The sweetness from the base of Far Yeast Off Trail 3 Funkeys took away some of the sourness from the Brett but the oakiness from the barrels was more noticeable once the beer had warmed up. The aftertaste wasn’t too dissimilar to the actual body of the beer, with some lingering malt sweetness and hints of cherries.
Far Yeast Off Trail 3 Funkeys The Bottom Line
Far Yeast Off Trail 3 Funkeys is an interesting mash-up that is rather drinkable. A good gentle introduction to sour beers.
