Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Dark Ale is a stout style beer from Waku Waku Beer, based in Kanazawa. It seems with the new shinkansen line that opened up in April 2015 to the Kanazawa region has coincided with a new range of beers being shipped across. Looks like the Japanese government knew what they were doing with the new train line. Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Dark Ale has an abv of 5.5% and is available all year round now.

A dark ale but a stout really. I think.

Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Dark Ale Aroma and Taste

Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Dark Ale is styled as a dark ale but that is like saying beers are either dark ales or light ales and then lagers. A bit of large pigeon hole to put yourself in though after some digging up and detective work i.e. asking the brewery themselves, it turns out that it is in fact a stout which makes it easier to review. Talk about a lack of buzzwords. Give Waku Waku Beer some PR help please.

Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Dark Ale poured out like a stout with a dark brown, verging on black body adorned with a frothy tan head that started off large and voluminous before moving down to a thin one finger layer, clinging on to the side of the glass for as long as possible. The aroma wasn’t too dissimilar to a warmed up cup of hot chocolate mixed in with some dark roasted espresso beans. Pretty nice really.

It’s in the drinking where Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Dark Ale turns up trumps as the roasted espresso beans luckily take the chocolatey route and not the bitter coffee that has been over pulled and brought out the acrid acid tones. If I ever have to give up coffee, and I really hope I don’t have to ever as that is what seems to power some of these reviews, it’s great to know that beers like Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Dark Ale have that coffee flavour I love to get me through. The aftertaste was a little smokey along with some sweet chocolate left on the tongue. Nice.

Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Dark Ale is a really nice stout that is worth picking up if you find it. Even if you don’t like coffee flavours, it’s still worth a try.
