Our Brewing Chocolat Ale : Background
Our Brewing Chocolat Ale is a 4% milk stout from Our Brewing, based in Fukui city, in Fukui. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, and is also part of their Valentine’s Day lineup, so don’t be surprised if this beer is sold out at the time of writing. The beer is made using discaded cacao husks and uses Motuka hops. As with all of the beers from Our Brewing, Our Brewing Chocolat Ale uses locally grown six row malt in the making of it.

Our Brewing Chocolat Ale : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Our Brewing Chocolat Ale poured out a pitch black colour, with a frothy and plump off-white tan head on top. That same head left thick rings around the glass, and I really wish I had washed it out immediately after drinking as they were thick and sticky!
The aroma was quite light on the nose surprisingly – some creaminess and of course coffee and chocolate came through but I was a little underwhelmed. It wasn’t a bad smelling beer by any means, but I would have liked something with some more punch to it. As Our Brewing Chocolat Ale warmed up, the chocolate aroma did develop a touch more, and brought a dark bitter note to the aroma.
At 4%, I wasn’t expecting much in terms of body from Our Brewing Chocolat Ale and I wasn’t surprised. It was lighter than most stouts I’ve had, but definitely ticked all the right boxes for what a milk stout should be like. Creamy? Check. Coffee? Check. Chocolate? Lashings. I think Our Brewing could have ramped up the alcohol content a bit more, and put some more body into this beer to make it luxurious, seeing as it was for Valentine’s Day.

A smooth, relatively low alcohol stout that while it doesn’t have legs, is a good effort.
