Miyajima Momiji Lager : Background
Miyajima Momiji Lager is a 5% Japanese rice lager from Miyajima Beer, based on the island of Miyajima, in Hiroshima. It’s part of their canned and draught line-up, and is also available all year round. The beer was inspired by the red colour of Hiroshima, the large torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, and the maple leaves of Miyajima. It also uses fresh hops from Kitahiroshima though it’s unknown at the time of writing what those hops are.

Miyajima Momiji Lager : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Miyajima Momiji Lager poured out an ever so slightly orange-red colour – nothing like the momiji that are around on the island – with a plump white head on top, though it didn’t last long. It left some thin rings around the edge of the glass, with a few bubbles on top.
The aroma from the beer consisted of a light caramel sweetness, and a light floral hoppy note. That was it throughout drinking – it really didn’t evoke any thoughts of deers, gates, or Hiroshima.
As in the nose, the body was mostly of caramel and a light floral hoppy note. There was a light bitterness and crisp body to drinking, but nothing that can’t be found in a macro lager in Japan. Throughout drinking, I tried my best to reminisce about the area, but alas, all I could think about was how much I wanted something with a bit more flavour, a bit more bite, a bit more, well, of everything.
Miyajima Momiji Lager : The Bottom Line
While it’s not a bad beer by any means, it’s not worth splashing out on – unless you’re looking to tick those boxes.
