West Coast Urban Fever

West Coast Urban Fever : Background

West Coast Urban Fever is a 5.5% American pale ale from West Coast Brewing, based in Mochimune, Shizuoka. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. It’s brewed using Motueka hops as well as two types of Nelson Savuin : Nelson Sauvin PM 19 and something Nelson Sauvin Bliss Process. The nomenclature is more impressive than what it entails : “It involves a specific timing of the hop harvest to capture the intense tropical flavors (typically found in later harvests) alongside the bright citrus and wine-like notes (more prominent in earlier harvests).”

West Coast Urban Fever : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

West Coast Urban Fever poured out a slightly hazy, but vibrant, golden lemon colour with a thin amount of white head on top that didn’t last long. The haze was more than likely from the can coming out of the fridge and being opened up immediately – it was a hot day that I drank this beer on!

The aroma from West Coast Urban Fever was a big and punchy stone fruit aroma at first, with some mango and peaches on the nose, before ceceeding to a citrus note of grapefruit and lemon. Underpining all of this was a light dusting of white wine notes – sharp and to the point but it never dominated over the other aromas.

Drinking West Coast Urban Fever began with a smooth, well-rounded bitterness that lingered but never threatened any aggressiveness on the palate. The flavours were more stone fruit than citrus, with a similar profile to the nose. However, there was a more nuanced sweetness in the body from the malt, with a light, but distinct, pilsner bite to the body. It was a clean body with no discernible hop burn or off-flavours to the beer, and with it being light on the palate, West Coast Urban Fever was finished off rather quickly.

West Coast Urban Fever : The Bottom Line

A really nice American pale ale though I wonder if it was more New Zealand pale ale than an American.
