Nick Jerky : The Bottom Line
Nick Jerky isn’t going to set the craft beer world alight – the beer on tap is mostly from Rokko Beer, which are hit and miss at times, but it’s a fantastic little space that you can easily sit down and while the hours away with a couple of cold beers, and some delicious jerky. It’s family friendly as well, so after you’ve spent the day going around the Kitanocho away, you can also pop in with your kids and let them rest.
Nick Jerky : Background
Nick Jerky is located in the Kitanocho area of Kobe, about a 10 minute walk from Sannomiya station, though it is up a very long and relatively steepish hill, so it’s a good idea to either get a taxi up, or combine your visit here as an end of trip beer after your day spent looking at the foreign houses in the area.
Nick Jerky is an off-shoot of a local butchers in the area, that specialises in Kobe Beef in Nakayamate-dori in and is recognizable by its navy blue awning tent. Nick Jerky opened in October 2018. While their primary source of meat is Kobe beef, you can also see them processing meats such as boar, deer, and pig in the processing area that is open to the public to observe.
Nick Jerky : Atmosphere & Interior
As you walk inside Nick Jerky, you’re greeted by a very minimalistic interior – lots of concrete and wooden blocks; both of which seem to be a popular theme in Kobe, with Hare to Ke for one being quite similar in appearance. On the day I went to Nick Jerky, there had been a DJ event the night before, but there was very little signs of this besides a random poster that was left outside on the entrance stand.
There is space for around 16 people inside, seated at some low camp bench seating around some interesting wooden blocks that had been pushed together for tables. There is also a fair amount of standing room too, which is useful for the aforementioned DJ and gallery events. The whole place is non-snoking and the bar does not charge any table charge either. It’s also a family friendly place so you can bring your kids along as well, especially useful after a long day of walking around the town.
Nick Jerky : Beer & Tap Information
On the day I went to Nick Jerky, there were only two taps of craft beer on, with the Rokko Pilsner and Rokko IPA being the two beers of choice. The beers were served in one size of 350 ml at ¥900, with no options for happy hour or beer flights, but the beers can be bought to takeaway. There are 5 taps available for drinking, but with Nick Jerky still reeling from the after effects of Covid-19, they are brining the taps on slowly.
Nick Jerky : Food & Menu Information
There are some small plates of food, with jerky being the main food on offer here, but be warned, it doesn’t come cheap, with 20g of jerky costing around ¥900. It’s expensive though the flavour is super intense and a little bit really does go a long way. There are some other types of jerky you can order – boar, deer, and pig – and you can also get some mixed nuts as well, so it’s a good idea to eat before you come here. Perhaps some baby castella from the shop down the road or maybe a quick Kobe beef croquette
