Baeren Iwate Common : Background

Baeren Iwate Common is a 5.5% Californian Common from Baeren Beer, based in Morioka city, Iwate. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup and is produced randomly throughout the year – so you’re going to have to do some hunting to find this one. It was originally brewed in 2020, to celebrate the 120th anniversary of JR Morioka station, and uses locally grown Little Star hops grown in Iwate.

Baeren Iwate Common : Appearance

Deep ruby brown colour with some light orange tinge to it in the right light. Thin amount of off-white head that fades to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass.

Baeren Iwate Common : Aroma

Light musty aroma – Iwate isn’t known for its hops and with Baeren Iwate Common, it isn’t going to become known for them. Subtle floral aroma as the beer warms up, with a sulfur like aroma in the background. More malt forward as the beer warms up with hints of caramel and nuts.

Baeren Iwate Common : Taste

Light bitterness with more malt flavour coming through first of all than hops. Hops are present with a musty floral flavour – again, are the hops oxidised or have they gone off?

Baeren Iwate Common : The Bottom Line

Baeren Iwate Common needs some tweaking – there’s a decent malt base there but the hops disappoint.
