Vertere Palmeri : Background

Vertere Palmeri is an 8% double IPA from Vertere, based in Okutama, Tokyo. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. It’s brewed with Mosaic Cryo, Luminosa, and Strata hops and was first released in May 2024.

Vertere Palmeri : Appearance

Dark golden brown colour with a large frothy slightly off-white head on top that left some sticky lacing down the edge of the glass.

Vertere Palmeri : Aroma

Not great to be honest. I like my double IPAs dank or citrus, maybe tropical as well, but this was lacking in all three departments. Instead, it had a diacetyl nose to it – something I don’t like at all in my IPAs. I was really surprised to note this aroma over anything else – had the beer been infected during canning? As the beer warmed up, there was some note of decent hop aroma cutting through the butteriness of the beer.

Vertere Palmeri : Taste

As in the nose, there was a peculiar buttery flavour to this beer and one that I didn’t really like. I don’t know if it was deliberate or not but it was a struggle to finish this beer – I had paid over ¥1,200 for this so you can be bloody sure I am not going to pour it down the drain. There was a touch of citrus and tropical flavour to the beer, but it was hard to actually pick out the specific flavours with the butteriness in the beer,

Vertere Palmeri : The Bottom Line

Vertere Palmeri is a big miss from me – perhaps it was a dodgy batch or something had gone wrong with it.
