Oriental Single Hop Citra is a 5% session IPA from Oriental Brewing, based in Kanazawa, in Kanazawa, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap at various places across Japan. As the name suggests, Oriental Single Hop Citra is brewed using only Citra hops, with these ones having been imported from the USA.

Oriental Single Hop Citra Aroma and Taste

Oriental Single Hop Citra poured out a clear golden colour with a plump white head on top that left white streaks down the side of the glass throughout drinking. The aroma was weird – there was a citrus note to Oriental Single Hop Citra, but this came with a price – an oxidised, papery nose that really wasn’t that pleasant. The bottle was well within its best before date. In fact, the bottle was less than a couple of weeks old at the point of drinking and had been stored in the BeerTengoku Beer Fridge, so it is either from poorly stored hops, or hops used incorrectly.

The body started off with a bitter kick, but it faded fast to a lemony oxidised flavour that really just seemed to sit on the taste buds. It wasn’t offensive or in your face, but it was noticeable and made Oriental Single Hop Citra a tough beer to enjoy. If you sit and focus on the lemon flavours, then it would have been fine but after having some of the beers at Oriental Brewing, I’m wondering if we’re left with a beer that has faced a bottling issue?

Oriental Single Hop Citra The Bottom Line

Give Oriental Single Hop Citra a miss. A shame really.
