TDM 1874 Sour Marionberry is a 5.5% fruit sour from TDM 1874 Brewery, based in Tokaichiba, in Kanagawa, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition lineup so its availability at the time of writing is unknown. As the name suggests, TDM 1874 Sour Marionberry is brewed using marionberry puree imported in from Oregon.
TDM 1874 Sour Marionberry Aroma and Taste
TDM 1874 Sour Marionberry poured out a dark purple colour with a medium amount of white head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass. The aroma though was a light dusting of fruit – which smelt like a cross between a raspberry and a blackberry (I’ve never had a marionberry so I don’t know what one smells like!) with a subtle sourness to the beer that wasn’t overpowering not offensive. Those wanting something hoppy, then look away as TDM Sour Marionberry isn’t the beer you’re looking for.
However, if you’re looking to get into sours, and I think that fruit beers and sour beers are a natural companion to each other, then you’re in luck. In spite of the name, TDM 1874 Sour Marionberry wasn’t overbearing on the sour notes, but it was full of flavour nonetheless. The berries brought a sweet tartness to the body, with the aforementioned comparison to raspberries and blackberries coming through again. The fruit lingered into the aftertaste too.
TDM 1874 Sour Marionberry The Bottom Line
TDM 1874 Sour Marionberry is going to be gentle on your tastebuds and your stomach.
