Doppo Schwarz is a 5% schwarz beer from Miyashita Shuzo, based in Okayama, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range of beers and can be found in both bottles and on tap across Japan. It’s also won a couple of awards – back in 1996 and in 2000 when noone really knew about craft beer in Japan it seems.

Doppo Schwarz 独歩シュバルツ

Doppo Schwarz Aroma and Taste

Doppo Schwarz poured out a dark brownish black colour with a meagre amount of slightly off-white head on top. The head faded fast to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. The beer had a slight woody, charcoal aroma to it, with some sweet caramel aroma coming through alongside a wee smidgen of chocolate too.

The body was more of the same – a lightly carbonated body with hints of roast malts paired with some chocolate sweetness too. It was unoffensive though the faint bitterness became a tad stronger once Doppo Schwarz had warmed up some more. It finished off with a lingering black malt and chocolate flavour to it.

Doppo Schwarz The Bottom Line

It’s easy to see why Doppo Schwarz won awards back in the early days of craft beer in Japan. It’s inoffensive and uninspiring but it’s not a bad beer by any means.
