Baeren Summer Weizen is a 5% German Hefeweizen brewed by Baeren, in Iwate, Japan. Confusingly, Baeren also make a winter weizen but it seems this is the summer version of it that can still be found throughout Japan. Baeren Summer Weizen differs from the Baeren Winter Weizen in that the flavours are softer to accommodate the searing heat that is face by those in Japan. At the time of writing, Baeren Summer Weizen can be found in both bottles and on tap.
Baeren Summer Weizen Aroma and Taste
I had to revisit Baeren Winter Weizen while drinking this to make sure my tastebuds weren’t being fooled by some clever marketing from the Baeren PR department, but as you can see in the pictures above, there was definitely a lighter colour to the summer version, with it being more of a hazy golden-straw colour rather than a golden amber colour. Moreover, the aroma coming off of Baeren Summer Weizen was not as pungent, with a softer nose of banana, wheat, and some apple most strangely coming through. If I hadn’t had been drinking Baeren Winter Weizen at the same time, then I would have thought they were two unrelated beers.
The taste of Baeren Summer Weizen was far softer and more refreshing than the winter version – which meant it also went down a lot quicker than I expected. It had a soft banana and wheat flavour with just the merest of hints of bitterness on the palate. It had a well-carbonated body to it that lifted some fruity esters through as well – some peach along with apple too. I could easily drink this on a summer’s day though drinking it in winter is still as good. It left a slight bready aftertaste to the palate which lasted briefly before fading.
Baeren Summer Weizen The Bottom Line
If you’re looking to find a great Japanese weizen, then hunt down Baeren Summer Weizen. Very very nice.
