Mangosteen New Colony

Mangosteen New Colony : Background

Mangosteen New Colony is a 5.5% saison rom Mangosteen Brewing Lab, based in Hokuto, Yamanashi. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, and is also available throughout the year. According to the sales blurb, this version of Mangosteen New Colony was made using their favorite Saison yeast. When they usually make beer with this yeast, Mangosteen Brewing Lab tend to use a higher fermentation temperature to bring out the pleasant ester aroma, but this time they deliberately set the fermentation temperature lower to cultivate the ester aroma modestly.

Mangosteen New Colony : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

Mangosteen New Colony poured out a light straw colour with a thick white head, made up of some sticky bubbles, on top that left some thick rings around the side of the glass.

In terms of aroma, the beer had a pleasant aroma of light estery note of banana and a touch of light spiciness in the nose – perhaps coriander or pepper had been used. The blend of aromas came together with a light sweetness from the malt to take some of the estery edge off.

Mangosteen New Colony had a dry body – in fact it was so dry that I could feel the moisture leaving my mouth as I drank the beer. The estery banana flavour, combined with some light spiciness, was all brought together just the faintest of sweetness from the malts. However, the flavour never really moved on, or developed, in spite of the beer warming up, which was kind of a shame.

Mangosteen New Colony : The Bottom Line

This is a solid saison though needs something extra to push it up to being very good.
