Background
Mangosteen Brewing Lab started brewing in November 2022, in Hokuto, Yamanashi, which is an area known for being surrounded by mountains such as Yatsugatake and Kaikoma-ga-take. The main company, also called Mangosteen, started operations back in August 2006.
The brewery is located in a factory that was once a camera tripod factory and houses two other facilities besides the brewery : a bottle shop and also a canteen aka taproom. The brewing facilities capable of producing up to 8,000 liters per month, which is around 24,000 cans. Moreover, Mangosteen Brewing Lab also try to upcycle, with malt, the main ingredient in beer, is discarded in large quantities after production as used. It is kneaded into boiled dumpling skins and reborn as boiled dumplings that can be bought in the taproom
Beer Reviews
The following are some of the beers we’ve had:
- Mangosteen Arise the Golden Hour – A 6% Belgian IPA that is a collaborative effort with Kakegawa Brewing. This beer solely uses Strata hops during the boil and for dry hopping.
- Mangosteen Hug Juice 2025 – A 5.5% coffee saison that uses coffee beans from Hug Coffee and has an infusion of coffee added post fermentation.
- Mangosteen I Saw Five Blue Windows Between The Clouds – A 6.5% saison that uses rye malt alongside some cardamon. It’s named after a UFO experience the head brewer had.
- Mangosteen Nakid Hiking – A 6% farmhouse ale, aka a saison, that is dry hopped with HBC 586 and Nelson Sauvin hops.
- Mangosteen New Colony – A 5.5% farmhouse ale, aka a saison, but that’s all we know about it.
- Mangosteen Suede Berry – An 8% dark saison that is brewed with locally grown organic blackberries.
