Atsumi Peninsula Brewing Company Information

Background

Atsumi Peninsula Brewing Company is a microbrewery based in Tahara City on the Atsumi Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The Atsumi Peninsula itself is a geographically and agriculturally rich area, known for its temperate climate, long sunshine hours, farmland, and coastal scenery.

The brewery was launched by 株式会社渥美フーズ (Atsumi Foods), a local company deeply involved in agribusiness, retail, and food production. Atsumi Foods has its roots as a regional supermarket operator, and over the decades has expanded into a variety of food-related businesses in and around Tahara. In the early 2020s, the company decided to branch into craft beer as part of a broader vision to revitalize the local community and economy, leveraging the peninsula’s agricultural richness and identity.

The physical brewery and its attached taproom, ATSUMI BREW PUB, are housed in a renovated part of a shopping complex called あつみの市レイ (Atsumi no Ichi Rei). This complex, reopened in February 2025, functions as a food and community hub: in addition to the brew pub, it includes a supermarket (run by Atsumi Foods), a bakery, and an eatery. On the same day the facility reopened, Atsumi Peninsula Brewing obtained its brewing license. The first beer was brewed shortly after (in March 2025), and the brewery publicly launched its canned products in April 2025, coinciding with the grand opening of the pub.

The head brewer is Takahiro Kawai. He is originally from nearby Toyohashi, and his journey into brewing started when he lived in Australia, where he began homebrewing. After returning to Japan, he gained experience in Japanese craft breweries (notably at RISE & WIN Brewing Co.) before joining Atsumi Peninsula Brewing.

A key part of their philosophy is local sourcing: they use water from the Atsumi Peninsula, and malt includes two-row barley grown in Tahara City. They also express a strong desire to make beers that are deeply rooted in the region, collaborating with local farmers and experimenting with local agricultural produce as ingredients.

Beer Reviews

The following are some of the beers we’ve had:

  • Atsumi Tikitiki – A 7% hazy IPA that is brewed using Motueka and Sabro hops.
  • Atsumi Totoko – A 6.5% West Coast IPA that was the first beer of this style from the brewery in 2025.
