Vertere Nox : Background
Vertere Nox is a 7.5% Sour IPA from Vertere based in Oku-tama, Tokyo. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. The beer is brewed with a combination of Citra Lupomax, Citra, and Idaho7 hops, and also uses lactose during the making of it. To make Vertere Nox a sour IPA, Vertere used Lactobacillus, making this a kettle sour style of IPA.

Vertere Nox : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Vertere Nox poured out a hazy golden straw colour, though the picture really doesn’t do it justice as it was more vibrant than can be seen above. There was a good level of carbonation to the beer, as it had a thick white head on top, which left some rings around the side of the glass.
There was a mixture of aromas present as well as a hint of clean sourness present throughout. The hops brought a bold citrus and tropical fruit nose to proceedings with some lemon and orange, alongside some mango and pineapple too. Vertere Nox had a light malt sweetness present, though it was more a supporting aroma, than a standout one.
With an IBU of 0, I wasn’t expecting any bitterness from the hops. However, what you do get is a big sour flavour from the bacteria used to sour the beer. Combined with the citrus and tropical flavours from the hops, all of it merged together to make a really nice beer. It also had a supporting sweetness during drinking, which was enough to balance it out and stop it from becoming one-dimensional.
Vertere Nox : The Bottom Line
This was a good surprise and I’d recommend it for anyone looking to try a twist on IPAs.
