Flora Constancia : Background
Flora Constancia is a 5% Mexican amber lager, from Flora Fermentation, based in Higashiomi, Shiga. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. The beer takes its name in honor of the brewery “La Constancia” that existed in Orizaba, Mexico in the 19th century. Finally, it is brewed using Cascade, Spalter Select and Styrian Wolf hops.

Flora Constancia : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Flora Constancia poured out a deep amber brown colour with a fluffy, off-white tan coloured head on top that left some thick streaks down the side of the glass during drinking.
In terms of aroma, the beer had a distinct malty aroma, akin to a Vienna Lager. While the beer had an aroma of caramel and toast in the beginning, there was a nutty and floral aroma as the beer warmed up. Just lying underneath all of this was a subtle citrus note, just waiting to pop out from the malts.
The body began with a smooth bitterness, that gave way to an inital taste of bready malts – some light toast and caramel notes were present, and found throughout drinking. The hops, while subtle in comparison, did bring another floral and citrus presence to the beer, though they laid firmly in the background during drinking. Finally, with the addition of the corn during fermentation, the body was crisp and dryer than a Vienna lager.
Flora Constancia : The Bottom Line
My first Mexican amber lager, and with Flora Constancia, hopefully it won’t be my last as this was tasty.
